We've had an extremely busy and productive week in Venice and now find ourselves driving to Punta Gorda to interview Brigadier General Rufus Lazzell. First, I want to thank Larry Humes (cc'd) for his time this week. His help and knowledge of Venice was instrumental in how successful our trip has been thus far. Thank you Larry! To
date, we have interviewed Susan Pillans, Alex Hodgins, Clare Suter,
Julia Cousins Laning, James Hagler, Mayor Holic, Fred Francis,
Larry Humes, and Bob Peters. The interviews have all been
insightful and added to the rich history and story of KMI.
Alex Hodgin was in good spirits and looked great, given his
recent treatment. He was very forthcoming and really helped fill
in some holes for us, especially in the mid-1920s and early 1930s.
He and Diane are looking forward to seeing everyone at the
reunion if his health holds.
Yesterday,
we spent the better part of a whole day with Bob Peters. As many
of you know, Bob has an incredible story which we captured in great
detail. The interview lasted 4 1/2 hours.
We
met with James Hagler and his wonderful staff a few times this week.
They were incredibly helpful and we managed to process a portion
of their KMI archive. We'll process the remaining items in April.
The new museum and archive expansion plans look amazing.
On
Monday, we'll be interviewing Ann Flotte, a local historian who
lectures on KMI's time in Eau Gallie. She has received permission
from the woman who owns the property that once occupied the KMI campus
to film there. Should be a very interesting day or two.
