STAFF REPORT PUNTA GORDA — The Military Heritage Museum has discovered and verified what it is calling a “remarkable collection” of documents from Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar Bradley in the post-World War II years, it announced in a Wednesday news release. “

This is an extraordinary discovery for our museum and historians alike,” Military Heritage Museum Executive Director Isaac James stated in a news release. “These are not just letters, they are the working documents of some of the most influential leaders in modern history, revealing the thought process, discipline, and humanity behind their leadership.”

The original and draft correspondents gives a glimpse into the leadership of the two, who helped lead America through World War II.

The letters involved are from the later 1940s when Eisenhower was moving from being the Supreme Allied commander to taking on a role as president of Columbia University, which he led until 1953.

“Many documents are typed on official letterhead bearing the five-star insignia and DDE initials, while others are draft copies preserved on thin carbon paper, complete with handwritten edits, annotations, and corrections,” the news release stated. “The collection also includes material connected to General Omar Bradley, further enriching the historical scope of the discovery.”

It noted there are documents that include recommendations, invitations and civic matters along with notes of condolences. “A condolence letter dated April 27, 1948, expresses Eisenhower’s deepest sympathy to the family of General C. P. Summerall reflecting both his compassion and his enduring bonds with fellow military leaders,” it stated.

But the documents also note Eisenhower dealing with a heavy schedule as he was courted by universities and political parties urging him to run for president.
“In an April 26, 1948 letter declining an invitation, he cites an overwhelming schedule and his concern about maintaining commitments, illustrating the weight of responsibility he carried even outside of wartime service,” the news release stated.
